PS4 Originally Had 4GB Of RAM

The initial amount of RAM in the PS4 was only 4GB. Shuhei Yoshida told GameSpot that the change came about due to developer feedback, stating it was a “business decision.”

“And because we chose expensive memory…we really liked the performance, but it’s pricey, right? So going to 8GB was a bit of a business decision. But we were able to make that decision because of a lot of the feedback from developers,” Yoshida said.

It seems we have a lot to thank the developers for. More RAM means more fluidity, and more fluidity means a better experience. Also, the jump to 8GB of RAM put the PS4 back in the competition considering the Xbox One features 8GB of RAM as well.
