The indie survival horror game, developed by Red Barrels, released first on PC and then on PS4 earlier this year. This means that it releasing on Xbox One causes it to be in direct “violation” of Microsoft’s release parity clause, which states that an indie developer may release a game on a Microsoft platform so long as that game releases on the Microsoft platform first or simultaneously on other platforms.

The game released on Xbox One via the ID@Xbox program. Its Whistleblower DLC is also available on Microsoft’s latest console.

Picture yourself at your local game shop.

You’re looking around, checking out the various games. There are a ton of shooters available. There’s also an assortment of racing games, fighters, sandboxes, sports games, and even RPGs. All genres you see and play everyday. But you want something a little different. You find yourself wondering, “Why don’t they have any games like that one title I loved? Or this one? Those games were awesome and I wish there were more!”

As a lifelong gamer it’s been a pleasure to watch the industry I love grow and become a pop culture phenomenom. But despite all of this advancement we continue to see the same types of games dominate the market year after year. And that’s taking into account the recent indie revolution.

Now there isn’t anything wrong with any of these classic genres. They’re gaming staples for a reason. But there are a number of other great genres and sub-genres out there. But for some reason they don’t receive the same amount of attention as the others, despite their capability of producing amazing titles on par with almost anything else in the industry.

Here are some of these game types. Every one excellent in its own right, and every one a genre that, in my opinion, we could use more of:

Metroidvania

Â

Or more specifically: 2D action-platformer with RPG elements and a key emphasis on backtracking via the acquisition of new abilites. Metroidvania games are titles that derive their core gameplay mechanics from the legendary, pioneering franchises Metroid and Castlevania.

While not so much a true genre, Metroidvania is a wildly recognized type of game with very passionate fans. This is because few other titles place as much emphasis on pure gameplay over presentation as these do. But don’t let that fool you; Metroidvanias have shown to be more than capable of telling strong stories and producing excellent visuals via tremendous art style and direction.

Last year’s critically acclaimed hit Guacamelee and the more recent Strider reboot have served as reminders as to how engrossing and fun these types of games can be. In a time where many games are focusing more on presentation and trying to be cinematic, it would be nice to have more games like this to remind us that pure, simple gameplay can trump any other aspect of a video game.

Kart Racing

Is there any genre that makes for a better couch co-op experience?

Kart racers have a way of taking us back to a simpler time. A time when video games were all about fun, relaxation, and have a good time with your friends. Nothing beats that feeling of launching a fully powered up weapon at your friend right as he’s about to cross the finish line. There’s laughing, there’s cursing, and there’s a pure joy to be had!

There’s plenty of room in the market for more kart racers. Companies need to get over the fear of being compared to undisputed genre king, Mario Kart (which will inevitably happen no matter what they do), and take the time to experiment and create a fun, unique karting experience. It would provide a great local multiplayer experience that many of us have been crazing. And with the power of modern gaming consoles, the experience can be taken online.

Plus, It would just be nice for those who don’t own Nintendo consoles to have access to a competent kart racer.

Survival Horror

This once proud genre has been stumbling for awhile now. Resident Evil has gone the way of an action franchise that happens to have a few spooky moments. And Silent Hill, while still creepy, hasn’t be able to produce anything up to the standards it set with classics like Silent Hill 2 and 3 for quite some time.

The indie game craze that’s been sweeping the industry the past few years has injected a bit of life into the genre. Games like Slender and Outlast have proven there’s still a market for great, original survival horror games. But waiting a year or two for a new competent one just isn’t going to cut it. If this genre is to return to prominence it’s going to need more and better releases.

Hopefully Shinji Mikami’s The Evil Within can keep the momentum going after the excellent Outlast from earlier this year and encourage more developers to try their hand at scaring the piss out of us!

Console RTS

Â

You know what’s strange? In 2009 the legendary Ensemble Studios (R.I.P.) released the excellent Halo Wars proving that RTS games can work on consoles. But we haven’t really seen any such game since. Why?

They showed that it’s very possible to create a great RTS on consoles so long as you develop it with that in mind. I’m legitimately shocked that no one else has tried to do the same since. We just started a new console generation featuring two powerhouse systems. I think it’s time for someone to attempt to recreate Ensemble’s magic, taking advantage of the fantastic new technology we have available.

First-Person Platformer

Sure we’ve seen platforming in first person games since the birth of the genre. But very few developers have attempted to create entire games based around that mechanic. When Mirror’s Edge launched in 2008 I thought we were witnessing the birth of a new game genre (or sub-genre I suppose). But I was clearly mistaken.

Several companies since have notably incorporated first person platforming/parkour into their titles (Such as Titanfall and Brink) but it never was the focus. I believe a game built around such a mechanic could really be something special. Perhaps the upcoming Mirror’s Edge 2 will be that game. If it’s great and builds upon the foundation laid by the original, first-person platforming could become the next big thing.

Mech

Who doesn’t love giant robots blowing everything up?!?!

The interesting thing about Mech games is that they ARE popular… just not in the west. Very few have managed to find real success here in the US. That could be because most of the ones that have been released here have either been of poor quality or extremely niche. All we need is that one breakthough mech game to come out and show how awesome they can be. For awhile, it looked like Hawken might have been that game. Alas, it itself hasn’t done much.

This is probably all just wishful thinking. I can’t expect the industry to give me everything I want and in droves. But it sure would be nice to see more games like the ones I’ve mentioned here. Are there any game genres or sub-genres you would like to see more of? Please feel free to comment and share your thoughts!

Sony’s insubmissive handheld game console, the PS Vita, has one major shortcoming as opposed to its main rival, the Nintendo 3DS: it doesn’t quite tally the same amount of AAA game titles. Seeing as some of the most prominent survival horror games fall under this category, there’s much left to be desired. However, it is a popular platform for indie games, which are largely on the rise. But whether it’s legendary mainstream entries or the small scale productions with some kicks, here’s a list of horror games that would be every bit as terrifying in smaller resolution as it is on a monitor…

10. Slender: The Eight Pages

Based off the popular fakelorgic Slender Man, a mysterious figure with a featureless face and arms so long they might as well be stilts in the wrong place. A free to play indie game, the game’s only objective is derived from its title: to collect eight pages. Starting off in a dark forest with only a flashlight, players will go about collecting the pages. With each page collected, the background music will gradually become more dreary and Slender Man will show up, and grow increasingly aggressive as the end of the objective becomes closer. Looking at Slender Man will result in a game over, but seeing the menacingly tall figure amongst the trees for the first few times will be so terrifying that it’s easy to run in all the wrong directions and straight into the Slender Man’s long, welcoming arms.

9. Resident Evil

Taking place directly after the events of a previous entry, Resident Evil 0, Alpha Team locates Bravo Team’s helicopter, but there is no trace of any survivors. Since mutated zombies are running wild in Raccoon City, and both teams were conducting investigations in the city’s outskirts, it’s safe to assume that a zombie or two are having a good meal. Players are left with the choice of one of two characters to start with: Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine. Besides their attribute difference, both influence plot details differently. Nothing quite replaces the adrenaline rush resulting from fear when fighting or running from mutated zombie hordes.

8. SCP Containment Breach

If the otherworldly monsters aren’t enough, the gameplay mechanics are even more of a nightmare in Containment Breach. Randomly generated rooms and enemies, a limited inventory, and no respawns… A little too close to reality in some ways, isn’t it? Then again, you are only a test subject for military experiments. And luckily there is the blinking mechanic, but it comes with a catch. When a monster is in sight, closing your eyes will only make things worse, because you’ll open it to find it standing right in front of you instead of where it used to be in the doorway many meters away.

7. Doom 3

Remember NASA’s plans to colonize Mars? In the universe set in the Doom franchise, it’d be best to pass should you ever receive that invitation to the red planet. In the game, scientists in Mars’ research facility are looking into technologies like teleportation, when a portal to Hell is inadvertently opened. All…hell breaks loose as demons invade, and players take up arms as an anonymous space marine to combat the threat before the devils can reach Earth. The malevolent spirits instill every sense of the word fear as one never quite knows where the jump scares will come from, as the demons manifest themselves in almost every nightmarish form imaginable.

6. S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl

In an alternate reality, a second nuclear meltdown disaster occurs at Chernobyl, but this it causes changes in the surrounding area that defies the laws of physics. Players wake up as a stalker – the term used for adventurers and treasure seekers within The Zone, a dilapidated area in which most of the action occurs – dubbed as “The Marked One.” Whilst adventuring through a dilapidated area called “The Zone,” players will scavenge for food to keep from starving, work their way around pockets of radiation areas and explore for artifacts to equip and improve stats. Only four types of main mutant enemies are encountered throughout the game, but even one of these enemies will make you wish that you’ve never come face to face with them.

5. Dead Space

The U.S.G Ishimura, the very first Planet-Cracker class ship, stands as a testament of humanity’s ability to extract resources from planets by literally breaking it open. From the surface of the planet Aegis VII, an alien artifact – the symbol and a treasure of immense value for the powerful Unitology religion – is unearthed. After mere hours, both the colony on the planet and the ship go dark. Engineer Isaac Clarke is dispatched along with a group of specialists on a repair mission. What they find on the seemingly derelict vessel is a gorefest and a parasitic alien enemy that foregoes the typical headshot kill. It’s either tear them limb from limb, or be torn apart yourself.

4. F.E.A.R

Something even more disturbing than an adult man or woman with cruel intentions is a little girl with immense psychic powers and seemingly no emotions. As part of a special operations team tasked to deal with paranormal threats, the little girl called Alma is more than capable of showing the very heart through the eyes of the player character dubbed “Point Man.” To battle the armies you’ll be up against, the Point Man possesses a supernatural skill known as “reflex time.” Enemy movements pass in slow motion until the ability’s meter runs out. It’ll also require superhuman resolve to endure the psychotic nature of the paranormal threat.

3. Silent Hill 2

After receiving a letter from his wife – who is deceased, by the way – James Sunderland drive to the town of Silent Hill, confused by the content of the letter. Immediately after arriving, he notices that the town isn’t what it used to be, and he subsequently becomes entangled in the same fog that has trapped others before him along with its lurking grotesques. With a heavy emphasis on close combat, whether in melee or with a firearm, the creatures that will seek to devour you will force you to look the few that still have faces, in the eyes while you fight.

2. Outlast

A relatively new release that already topped the charts of numerous horror lists, this’ll make you regret ever having set foot inside the Mount Massive psychiatric hospital as a freelance journalist. With cluttered, corpse-strewn hallways and blood soaked grounds, the unfathomable violent tendencies of the mentally insane is only an appetizer of the supernatural terror that lurks underground. Armed with only a video camera in constant need of batteries, you’ll even be checking if the Vita has enough power for fear of the dark.

1. Amnesia: Dark Descent

Waking up in the dark hallways of the Prussian Brennenburg Castle in 1839, the only things facts still embedded in the shattered memory of an amnesiac man is his name, Daniel, his residency and that he’s being hunted by something. With the dark foe in hot pursuit, Daniel’s only option of survival is to run and hide. Spend too much time in the light or dark, and monsters in the castle will be drawn to you. In addition to spending too much time in the dark, Daniel’s – and maybe your own – sanity will start to drain away…

Agree or disagree with the list? Feel free to add your own input of anything you feel has been left out. And if you’re feeling incredibly brave, go play all of these in the dark with noise-canceling headphones.

For those of you who were eager to get your hands on Outlast for PS4 like I am, you’ll be excited to learn that Outlast will be the free game of the month for Plus subscribers in February. The survival horror game has a massive following on the PC and will reach an even wider audience with the game making its way onto the PS4. Throw in the fact that it’s free for Plus subscribers and it has an even greater guarantee of being a hit than it simply making its way onto the console.

Being the free game of the month means that the game is going to find its way into the hands of more gamers. Games like this that make their way to home consoles from PC have a great chance of doubling their audience and fans – especially considering people can watch some gameplay on YouTube before getting the game to see if it’s something they’d be interested in. Keep a look out on the PlayStation store this February so you don’t miss out on one of the most talked about games since before the console’s launch.

I love Autumn. The leaves start falling, the nights start getting longer, and the evenings start getting just a little bit cooler. Autumn even has a smell – I’d put it somewhere between the nice and soothing aroma of cinnamon and a slight whiff of fresh potpourri. The preparations for Halloween start happening and surround you all month long – just like that certain, idealized season in Rockstar’s game, Bully. And when college football starts, you know Fall’s definitely on its way. So how do our staffers’ cope with this lovely season? By cozying up, staying inside, and playing a scary amount of games! Check out what the SpawnStaff’s been busy with in September, and what they have up their sleeves for October.

John Finch – SpawnVids/Staff Writer

What were you playing in September?

I spent the month of September absorbed, once again, in the world of The Last of Us. The game is still in the top 3 best looking games ever, and itâ€s definitely still exciting to go back and try some encounters over again or to go through some I forgot entirely. Iâ€ve also been playing one of the free games from PlayStation Plus, Bit.Trip Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien, an excellent rhythm title that quickly goes from charmingly cute and relaxing to infuriatingly hard and challenging. It may have been the first time I lost my temper at a game with a level as adorable as the Welkin Wonderland. The controls are tight and right on beat, giving the game a very intuitive and accessible feel before the difficulty ratchets up and becomes legitimately challenging. If youâ€re already a PlayStation Plus subscriber and havenâ€t picked this game up, then get up right now and get it. Are you still here?! Oh my god, go get the game! Itâ€s adorable!

Whatâ€s up for October?

Iâ€m going to be picking up a 3DS and catching up with the rest of the handheld universe so Iâ€ll be playing Pokemon X and Y. Iâ€m a humongous Pokemon fan and this new title looks to add a lot to the fantastic Pokemon series while returning to the gameâ€s roots. Iâ€m also excited for the new Batman title dropping towards the end of October. Arkham Asylum and Arkham City were impressive additions to the stealth universe with gameplay mechanics that are emulated by stealth and action games alike. Arkham Origins promises to continue that trend and, despite being a prequel, explore some new ground for the series. Iâ€m also going to be playing the Resident Evil Remake for the Gamecube, because survival horror is my favorite genre and this Resident Evil title is my favorite of the series.

Justin Celani – Video Content Director

What were you playing in September?

So September has come and gone, and I played a few titles here and there. Nothing major was on the agenda, so I recorded a few videos of game play on the House of Gaming Horrors channel, covering Outlast and Amnesia A Machine for Pigs (both of which made me crap my pants, for your information). And there was only one possible explanation for the vacuum of games in September – the mother lode was about to drop. GTA V was coming and I could hear its drumbeat in the distance. As fast as it dropped into my hands, down my pants, and into the system tray, I was robbing, killing, stealing, and smiling the entire time. Sure itâ€s just “GTA” but the amount of detail in the world is staggering, and the refinements done to the gameplay, story, and world was just outstanding. This consumed me.

Whatâ€s up for October?

As for the rest of October, I know for a fact that Iâ€ll be finishing up GTA Vâ€s story mode, and will be hopping into GTA Online (when itâ€s NOT broken). The fact that this has taken up the majority of my gaming hours of September, Iâ€m scared of how it the same might happen in October. Should I eat, sleep, and play more GTA V? Time will tell. As for titles Iâ€m highly anticipating this month? Well, thatâ€s a damn good question. What exactly will I be looking out for? The retail release of Knock, Knock on PC looks to be an interesting and unique take on horror from a 2D perspective. Beyond Two Souls is already about to arrive on my doorstep, and coming from a big fan of Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain, this looks damn good! Last but not least, I plan to do some Swashbuckling in Assassins Creed IV, and sure most people are tired of the series… but personally, I enjoyed each and every new iteration. AC + Pirates + Grog = AWESOME. ‘Nuff said.

Buddy Acker – Staff Writer

What were you playing in September?

Our Editor-in-Chief can vouch for me (Editorâ€s note: I can) when I say I played a whole lot of damn games in September and I can in no way name them all without this being 5,000 words long. So I’ll just cover a few. I played a bunch of Grand Theft Auto V, just like the rest of the world. It’s my favorite game of 2013 so far. I played and reviewed Pandora’s Tower, Crash City Mayhem, Heavy Fire: The Chosen Few, Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F, LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins and the king of them all, the PS3 version of Diablo III, which is incredible. I also recently completed Mario & Luigi: Dream Team and I’m currently playing Ascend: Hand of Kul, and I’ll be reviewing them both. It isn’t hard to notice I had a strange month of gaming. Otherwise I played Fable III, FIFA 14 and Saints Row IV, and I finally completed the campaign in Rainbow Six: Vegas.

Whatâ€s up for October?

I’ll still be playing Ascend: Hand of Kul and GTA V (I hope Rockstar fixes the issues in GTA Online soon because right now it’s just a mess). I’ll also probably still be playing Fable III, which I personally love. October is a big month for gaming with the upcoming releases of Batman: Arkham Origins, Battlefield 4 and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, and possibly LEGO Marvel Super Heroes and WWE 2K14, weighing heavy on folks’ minds. I’ll more than likely play all of those games at some point. I know for certain I’ll be checking out Assassin’s Creed IV and WWE 2K14 as I am a big fan of both of those franchises and the fact that Redbox will be carrying them both. As far as what I’m reviewing, so far the only game I’m sure of is Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, which I’m certain to be playing for a while. I’ll also play a hundred other games, but I’m not sure which ones.

Fraser McIntyre – Staff Writer

What were you playing in September?

Well I played a lot of Rome 2 – that was to be expected. I must have racked up 40 hours between the 3rd and the 7th. I’ve been playing some Shadow Warrior and it’s been fantastic. It’s a great game and so silly. Unsurprisingly enough, I’ve also laid into GTA 5 something awful and managed to finish it. I was pretty disappointed with the length but it was still a great game. I got Kerbal Space Program not long ago as well and itâ€s despicably addictive and I still haven’t gotten to the Moon yet! Must keep at it. I also revisited Carrier Command: Gaea Mission in the hopes that it didn’t totally suck and I was overreacting. Unfortunately it does pretty much suck. A lot.

Already got Battlefield 4 beta on the go and I’ve been hitting that recently. Been pretty crappy so far, what with the optimization problems for my brand of card and what not, but I got a decent game earlier on and I was kicking myself for not recording! I will also be delving back into Dark Souls in the hopes that I will finally destroy that asylum monster thing that always kills me! (I rage quit that game so much). But mostly, I hope to be tanking on with Shadow Warrior, possibly acquire a copy of Planetary Annihilation and go for that. Maybe some Arma 3 as well. Yeah October will be good!

Well, Grand Theft Auto V ate my soul in ways I never expected it to, but I also picked up a Saint’s Row game for the first time ever.  After listening to Steve Jaros (creative director, Volition) say things, “You can’t unf*ck that,” in reference to the silly things that happen in the SR series at Dragon Con, I thought, well, if he’s this funny, the game has to be that funny– and I wasn’t wrong.  My SR the Third playthrough did get derailed by GTAV, but we’ll get back to it.  I also revisited Dragon Age after seeing the pretty epic Dragon Age Inquisition preview at Dragon Con, and I somehow realized there were DLCs I’d never played.  Damn you, BioWare.  And because my month wasn’t full enough, I played and reviewed Papers, Please.Â

Grand.  Theft.  Auto.  V.  And I honestly might go back and replay all of the other four (maybe even at once, if my carpal tunnel holds out). And regarding GTA 5: that game is deep. There is just so much to do, so many emergent gameplay elements to savor, that I became lost in it almost immediately. The story, at least for me, is just a pleasant extra. The gameplay is where itâ€s at.

In September, my friend and I rented Kirby’s Dream Land for the Nintendo Wii from Gamefly, and we played around with our nostalgia for a bit. Towards the end of September, a friend of mine lent me 3 awesome games for the PS3 that I had never played before: Dark Souls, Tom Clancyâ€s EndWar, and The Last of Us. I’ve definitely had a lot of fun with all the games Iâ€ve played this month, and sadly, they’ll have to go back to their owner soon.

I honestly cannot afford GTA V, otherwise I would definitely be going out to get it. I used to love the games back in the old days when GTA: Vice City was top stuff, but these days, I’ve kinda chilled out and will likely pick it up eventually when someone else is getting bored of it ( if ever.) I want to play through Dark Souls some more and get further into the game, as I’ve hardly had time to play around with it with all of my game programming classwork piling up on the burner – and coming close to lighting me on fire.

In September, I mainly played Counter Strike: Global Offensive. The new updates that include gun skins and new maps for competitive mode are great, and show that Valve won’t be giving up on the game anytime soon. I also picked up FIFA 14, and played that for quite a bit, although it came out late in the month.

For October, I plan on playing a lot more FIFA 14 as well as going back and finishing The Last of Us. I became busy in the summer with my internship, so I didn’t finish it. The new DLC announcement pleasantly reminded me that I need to. People get close to spoiling The Last of Us for me all the time, so I might as well get it over with. Hopefully I’ll get into Tomb Raider and play a bit more Skyrim this month as well.

In the beginning of September, I wasnâ€t playing any game steadily until the release of Grand Theft Auto V (Iâ€ll get to that in a minute). In the beginning of the month, I was spending most of my time playing Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles. Iâ€m a huge fan of the Resident Evil series. I was attempting to get through all the sub-story chapters but then my interest started to dwindle; rail shooters can only hold my attention for so long. Not to mention I had quite a few bones to pick with some unfair moments in the game! But I digress. When I wasnâ€t playing Resident Evil, I was playing Sam & Max: Beyond Time & Space. I had beaten this episodic adventure in its entirety on PC years ago, but my nostalgia caused me to buy it again. Plus, I couldnâ€t pass up the opportunity for some extra trophies. I also played Galaga Legions DX for a very short while before the release of Grand Theft Auto V. GTA V released and all these other games are patiently awaiting my return. I am sad to say Iâ€ve joined the conspiracy hunt that is plaguing the internet. I might dabble a bit here and there in the freebies that come to PlayStation Plus, preferably Shadow of the Colossus, and Hotline Miami. I pre-ordered Batman: Arkham Origins so once October 25 rolls around, it will be an internal struggle on whether to hunt mysteries on Mount Chiliad or fight to stay alive and hone Batmanâ€s skills.
I spent most of my time anticipating the release of FIFA 14. Before it was released however, I played a bunch of varied games. I hopped on Minecraft on PC after not touching the game in nearly a year. To my surprise, the gameâ€s still as entertaining as ever. I also played a good few FPSâ€s, such as Halo 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, PayDay 2 and Counter-Strike Source. I started up my Nintendo Wii (yes, the Wii, not the Wii U), which was covered in dust to play Mario Kart Wii, one of my favourite games of all time. Playing online is difficult seeing as I have all four profiles above 9000 VR and 2 on 9999 VR. It was definitely a fun, yet frustrating experience. Since picking up FIFA 14 on release (27 September), Iâ€ve been playing that non-stop. Most of my friends, if not all of them, have GTA V, so Iâ€m sure many good times are to be had in the coming weeks. However, I will part myself (or at least attempt to) from GTA V to play FIFA 14. My Ultimate Team is rather average at the moment, and Iâ€m hoping to improve on my team greatly.

Welcome all, to part 4 of SlasherJPC’s walkthrough of Outlast! Actually, this might be the best episode yet, considering the amount of $#its SlasherJPC utters. And the scare counter? Well, it goes off the charts in this one, believe you me.

Also, thanks to DJShauny1 (Shaun): SlasherJPC and The_SpawnCast are gifting a copy of Outlast to a certain lucky individual as long as they meet the following criteria:

1. Subscribe to SlasherJPC’s Channel and make a comment on his Outlast Walkthrough #4 Video.

2. Follow @The_SpawnCast on Twitter!

There you have it! Once you meet the above 2 criteria, you are eligible to WIN a Steam code of Outlast, and the winner will be announced in Part 5 of the Outlast walkthrough videos, so stay tuned to SlasherJPC, The SpawnCast, and SpawnFirst.com!

Note: SlasherJPC and The SpawnCast will be comparing entries to see if all 2 criteria above have been properly met to consider potential winners. Also, we take note of “drop-offs” that only Like/Follow/Subscribe when there’s a contest afoot, and we will leave these entries out of consideration for future contests. Once the winner has been contacted via Twitter or FB message, they will have 24 hours to respond to us, otherwise the prize will be awarded to another potential entrant.
